TPU Internet site to get an extreme makeover
Community & Media Services is working with Sitecrafting, a local Web development company, on creating a new look for the TPU Web, which includes the Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water and Tacoma Rail sites. As part of that effort, the company will develop a content-management system that will allow more employees to keep the Web site updated and fresh. CMS looks forward to launching the site in mid-February and will keep you posted on the progress. If you have questions about the new site, contact Chris Gleason, Community & Media Services, 502-8222.

Wanted: photos of our fearless leader
Dig in your drawers and forage in your files. In preparation of a presentation for Mark Crisson’s retirement, Chris Gleason, Community & Media Services, is looking for photos of Mark that cover his 29-year career at TPU. We’ve heard rumors about photos of Mark in a tutu, but we haven’t seen evidence they truly exist. Please help by sending hard copy or digital photos to Chris by October 1. All hard-copy photos will be scanned and returned.

Giving Back

TPU United Way campaign kicks off this Thursday, September 27
Beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Cafeteria, you can purchase last-minute tickets for the basket raffle. The official program starts at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 9 a.m. with the live drawing of all basket raffle winners (need not be present to win). During the program, Rick Allen, United Way of Pierce County president, will talk about the gains the United Way has made in Pierce County, so come prepared with questions.

Campaign goal is 50 percent participation and better education about United Way services
TPU’s United Way committee hopes that at least 50 percent of employees will pledge money toward the campaign this year. But instead of setting a monetary goal, the team has taken a new approach, deciding instead to focus on education about United Way’s services. By providing as much information as possible about the organization’s good works in our community, we hope to demonstrate the need to support such a vital part of our network. New employees might consider giving $2 a pay period, which can provide a family of four with regular hot meals. If you already donate to United Way, maybe you’ll increase your gift this year. United Way touches the lives of one in three individuals living in Pierce County. You never know when it might be you.

Did you know this about United Way? An attempt to clarify the Boy Scout question
Did you know that the United Way never gives unrestricted money to a non-profit organization? The United Way only gives money to a program of an organization. That way, the United Way volunteers who make the funding decisions and monitor use of funds can ensure tighter fiscal responsibility for donors who want donated money to be used under specific guidelines. For the last couple of years, United Way of Pierce County has funded a program of the local Boy Scouts. The United Way — like almost every other funding organization in this country, including corporate foundations — does not support agencies that practice discrimination. However, the amount of money given through the United Way by donors specifically requesting their money goes only to the Boy Scouts has increased dramatically. The result is that the Boy Scouts now receive more money through the United Way donor voice program than they ever did in the past.

September is Mental Health Awareness Month — Solve workplace problems and find solutions to stressors
Aaaaaaaaaaaargh! Feel better? Maybe you do, but probably not for long. The Mayo Clinic notes that successful stress management involves more than a quick release. To alleviate a stressful situation for good, you must identify the issues causing it, and then create strategies to make the issues less problematic. Try these simple steps:

  • Identify: What's causing your stress?

  • Clarify: What would make the problem go away?

  • Create: Now that you have a well-defined problem, think of all the possible ways to solve your problem, without judging whether one possible solution is better than another.

  • Choose: Of all your ideas — silly or serious — which make the most sense?

  • Evaluate: Really think through your solution; even the best ones can require fine-tuning.

  • Implement: Believe in yourself, be brave and try your solution out.

  • Reflect: In every outcome there is a lesson.
