Green Scene Special

"Tacoma Recycles @ Work" program hitting TPU October 15
Beginning next week, you can recycle everything you might at home
plastic bags and bottles, cans, paper, boxes and cardboard in the bin under your desk and in larger containers in conference and break rooms. Look for new desk bin stickers and posters in common areas for more information about what is and is not recyclable. Glass still will be taken, but in separate containers. "Tacoma Recycles @ Work" is a successful venture that began at the Tacoma Municipal Building and is now expanding to other City departments. Contact Rick Herrmann, 502-8226, with questions.

Scrolling conservation billboard is roaming Tacoma
Have you seen this around town? A GoMobile truck is traveling around Tacoma advertising Tacoma Power’s refrigerator recycling and home weatherization programs with a scrolling billboard. The truck will stop at various locations, and drivers will distribute program brochures to onlookers. As a bonus, the vehicle runs on biodiesel, reducing the environmental impact of this new and creative marketing tool.

Ridesharing rocks! Especially when you win prizes
During the month of “Rocktober,” the CAT (Consider Alternative Transportation) club at TPU will prove that ridesharing makes your commute rock and roll. The annual Wheel Options statewide promotion starts with a stone-cold crazy grand prize for some lucky commuter who tries ridesharing at least twice between October 8 and 19: a seven-day trip for two to Zion National Park in Utah. Other prizes include a weekend getaway at Quinault Beach Resort in Ocean Shores, a weekend getaway to the Inn at Blackberry Creek in Walla Walla and a variety of $100 gift cards. Plus, there will be prizes presented countywide, including a weekend getaway to Run of the River Lodge in Leavenworth, restaurant coupons and AMC movie gift cards. Ridesharing not only provides opportunities to win prizes, but it also can help save money on your commute. Try carpooling, riding the bus, vanpooling, biking or walking to work, and your rolling stone will gather no moss. But it will start accumulating other green stuff, namely dollars, for you. For more information about the many benefits of ridesharing, contact Randy Stearnes, employee transportation coordinator, 502-8224.

Show Outlook time as “busy” to lock in conference rooms
When booking conference rooms in Outlook, meeting organizers need to select “show time as busy” (the default selection). If you pick “show time as private,” the room approver cannot open the
e-mail, and if you select “show time as free,” the system accepts other requests for the same time and can double-book the room.

Daylight-saving time can affect Outlook for October 28 to November 3
Some people could experience a glitch in Outlook calendaring for appointments scheduled between October 28 and November 3. This is related to the extension of daylight-saving time (DST) Congress approved in 2005. It affects meetings previously scheduled during the extended DST period. It should not affect meetings you schedule now or during the affected time periods. Just in case, though, Information Technology recommends that when you schedule new meetings during the extended DST period, you put the time of the meeting in the body or subject line of the meeting request so attendees can ensure they have the correct meeting time. If you are the meeting organizer and your meeting appears at the wrong time between October 28 and November 3, you will need to cancel/delete the original meeting and recreate it. Contact your area’s computer support representative with questions.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Early screening can be extremely important
The National Cancer Institute notes that screening can help doctors find cancer early. And treatment is more likely to work well before cancer is allowed to advance. Your doctor could suggest the following screening tests for breast cancer:

You should ask your doctor about when to start and how often to check for breast cancer. The institute’s Web site at www.cancer.gov has more information about these screening options. The mammogram van from Swedish Medical Center will be available December 3, 4 and 5 in the Market Street parking lot across from the Tacoma Municipal Building, as well as on December 12 and 13 in the TPU parking lot. Appointments can be made with Swedish at 206-320-2500 or breastcareexpress@swedish.org. Mammograms are typically considered preventive and are covered at 100 percent by City health plans.
