News You Can Use

New Newsline format — so what do you think?
Starting today, Newsline is a Web-based, color publication, with a link e-mailed to employees and others on the mailing list. We still print some copies and place them in the Cafeteria and other locations. We’ve cut down on the repetition of information and produce Newsline only on Mondays, with items running once in the main news sections, then bumping to the calendar portion if time-sensitive. The deadline to submit items for Newsline is 10 a.m. on Fridays. E-mail newsline@cityoftacoma.org, or call editor Laurel Willoughby, 502-8754, if you don't have e-mail access. Take a minute and let us know what you think of the new Newsline!

The search is on for new utilities director
The process to replace Utilities Director Mark Crisson is under way. The Public Utility Board will conduct a national search for candidates, but also anticipates receiving applications from current TPU employees. Mycoff and Associates, an expert in hiring utility industry executives, will help the board screen applications and select candidates for interviews. The proposed recruitment schedule is:

Aug. 24 — Application period closes
Aug. 29 — Short list of candidates
Sept. 5 & 6 — Interviews
Sept. 12 — Negotiations
Sept. 26 — Appointment

Mark intends to retire at the end of October. The new director will start no later than November 1. Check out the full job announcement or see a shorter version on the City of Tacoma’s Jobs Web page.

One of their baby portraits recently took first place in the Best Buddies category of the Tiny Tots Big Kids Shots, a national professional child photography competition. The winning image shows twins lounging in a galvanized washtub, lying back with their feet up.

Wanna make 30 bucks? Recycle your old icebox
Starting August 1, Tacoma Power and Puget Sound Energy are offering customers $30 to ditch their old refrigerators and freezers, and here’s the kicker — the utilities will haul them away for free and safely recycle the units! Older refrigerators and freezers require up to five times more power than newer models, and the insulation and refrigerant products can release harmful, ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. Besides having cash in pocket, participating customers also will save up to $200 on their annual electric bills, the average cost of electricity wasted annually by old fridges and freezers. To schedule a pickup, call JACO Environmental at 877-299-0510 or visit www.jacoinc.net. Units must be in running order and at least 10 cubic feet in volume.

Motorcycle Dam Ride raised $1,529 for seniors
On Saturday, July 21, 79 riders on 53 motorcycles braved the weather for the 2007 Dam Ride to the Cushman Project in Mason County. The ride raised $1,529 in donations to benefit TPU’s Senior Assistance Fund. Qualifying seniors receive $100 sponsorships, which help pay their utility bills. Special thanks to organizers Ron Koecke and Frank Weite, T&D; Linda Brent, Generation; and Randy Stearnes, Community & Media Services.

Sumner Relay for Life needs your support
Sumner’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life is August 10 and 11.
