News You Can Use
Employee/Retiree Holiday Breakfast is December 24
Come on
down to the Cafeteria that Monday morning between 7 and 9 a.m. for free
breakfast!
Last week’s building evacuation courtesy of burning toast
Burning toast in the fourth floor/west side kitchenette set off the fire
alarm last Tuesday at 9:02 a.m. The detectors and alarm system
worked as designed, with an orderly evacuation and response leading up to
the all-clear 12 minutes later. Please mind your food closely when cooking
in the building.
Less than a month left to meet community involvement goal
Have you done it? December 31 is right around the corner. Turn in your
completed community involvement goal paperwork to Human Resources or submit
your information on CityWeb at Employee Resources/TPU Incentive Program.
Your co-workers will appreciate your participation. To earn your incentive
day, 80 percent of employees must document at least eight hours of community
service by December 31. Tell your friends!
December CityScape features electrical decorating safety
It's time to remind everyone about basic electrical safety for holiday
decorating. Richard Friel, Electrical Inspection, appears in December's TV
Tacoma CityScape program with important information to keep the season
bright and safe. We also hear the angelic voices of a group from Energy
Services who sings us into the holiday season. CityScape airs daily on TV
Tacoma Channel 12 throughout December. Check listings for
times and channels outside Tacoma.
Are your Cafeteria football contest
picks getting any better?
The winner in
week 12 of the Cafeteria football contest was Joseph Albert, Transmission &
Distribution, with 14 of 16 correct.
The winner for week 13 will be
posted Tuesday morning. Ballots for week 14 are in the Cafeteria and must
be turned in by Friday, December 7, at
4 p.m. One entry per person per
week. The person who picks the most winners each week earns a $10 Cafeteria
food card and an entry in the Super Bowl contest at the end of the season. The
winner of the Super Bowl contest takes home a $50 gift card to the Outback
Steakhouse.
And in Apple Cup news:
yes, the
Cougs did it, in the
Dawg house . . .
42-35, but who's
keeping track? Those
apples sure tasted good!

T&D crew helps former employee's widow with fence repair
Transmission & Distribution “line elves” did an early holiday good deed
recently: A car had crashed into the garage and fence belonging to the widow
of a former employee. The insurance company paid for the garage, but the
fence was not repaired . . . until Julie Arnestad, Energy Services, learned
of the woman’s situation and passed it along to Transmission & Distribution.
Without hesitation, a group of good-hearted T&D line electricians took on
the project. Larry DeForrest was able to wrangle a great price on lumber for
the customer from Norris Nickerson of Mill Outlet. After that, a T&D crew
went out on its own time, put up a new fence and removed all the old
material. The customer was thrilled and very thankful for Tacoma Power’s
assistance.

For Your Benefit
Stress: an
unhealthy response to the pressures of life
Letting stress get the best of you could be doing more harm than
you think, according to the Mayo Clinic. Take control by understanding the
stress response and how your body reacts. Physical reactions you experience
when you're stressed are no accident. The human body developed these defense
mechanisms to deal with the threat of predators and aggressors. But modern
life is full of new threats. Your body's well-adapted defenses against
physical dangers might not be as effective at dealing with the stress you
feel while managing a huge workload, making ends meet or taking care of an
ill parent or child. Instead of protecting you, your body's response to
stress, if constantly activated, can make you more vulnerable to
life-threatening health problems. Check the
Mayo Clinic’s site to find out more about how stress can affect your
health, and how to get on the road to managing stress.
