Plug it in, plug it in: TPU’s hybrid electric vehicles changing
Fleet Services has converted one of the Toyota Prius pool cars to a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, meaning it needs to be plugged in to the outlet at the back of the stall when not in use. (We shouldn't have to mention this, but don't forget to unplug the car before pulling away!) We expect delivery of a second vehicle this week. Both cars feature a colorful wrap with the message, “Tacoma Power . . . Plugging in for our future.” A plug-in hybrid operates solely on battery power for the first 16 to 60 miles of travel. Then when the battery depletes, the vehicle automatically operates like a hybrid car, cycling back and forth from electric to internal combustion power. Plug-in hybrid batteries have more power than hybrid batteries. Besides reduced emissions, using plug-in hybrid electric vehicles limits the utility’s carbon footprint because most of Tacoma Power’s electricity comes from emission-free hydroelectric projects. Contact Fleet Services, 502-8240,
with questions about the program.

Vending prices edging up next year
Effective in 2008, Canteen Vending will raise prices on snacks and beverages sold in vending machines at the TPU Administration Complex:

  • Small candy $0.75       (5-cent increase)

  • Large candy $1.10       (10-cent increase)

  • Gum and mints $0.65    (5-cent increase)

  • Can beverages $0.70    (10-cent increase)

  • Bottle beverages $1.25 (25-cent increase)

The last price hop was in July 2004, and the current increases are necessary to keep up with the rising cost of business. If you have any questions, contact Rick Herrmann, 502-8226.

Click! adds economic forecast to free local video-on-demand
One of the best things about local video-on-demand is that our customers have access to events that were previously one-time-only or not open to the public. Our very first local video-on-demand program, The 72-Hour Film Festival (still available on Click!), is a perfect example. If you didn’t see it at the Rialto or didn’t buy the DVD, you were out of luck — unless you had Click! Customers now also have free access to Horizons 2008, the annual forecast of the area's economic well-being. It was presented during a recent breakfast for Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce members, and now it’s available on local video-on-demand. Thanks to Diane Lachel, Click! Network, who worked with the Chamber and TV Tacoma to acquire this for our customers.

Cafeteria football contest barrels through the holidays
The winner in week 15 of the Cafeteria football contest was Dave Walsh, Water Distribution, with 12 of 15 correct choices. The winner for week 16 will be posted Wednesday morning. Ballots for week 17 are in the Cafeteria and must be turned in by Friday, December 28, at 4 p.m. One entry per person per week. The person who picks the most winners each week earns a $10 Cafeteria food card and an entry in the Super Bowl contest at the end of the season. The winner of the Super Bowl contest takes home a $50 gift card to the Outback Steakhouse.

Employees bring smiles to 235 Salvation Army Giving Tree gift recipients
You did it! TPU employees pitched in to buy gifts for 75 adults and 160 children through the Salvation Army Giving Tree. At an estimated value of $30 each, employees donated more than $7,000 in gifts to those who might otherwise go without. Many seniors receiving gifts have gone five, 10 or 15 years without one. Employees’ efforts mean even more when you consider that giving is way down this year at the Tacoma Mall tree, the only bigger Giving Tree in the area. Thank you to Charleen Jacobs, Liz Larson, Tony Rector, Lyn White and Ron Robydek for coordinating the program.

Adopt-a-Family campaign rang some bells, too
TPU was one of the largest contributors to the Greater Lakes Mental Health Adopt-a-Family program this year by adopting 12 families. Sadly, 75 percent of the 70 families in the program requested basic items such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. Many of these families depend on food stamps that don’t cover such items. TPU employees went above and beyond, providing new clothes, toys and even some needed electronics and appliances. Based on a rough estimate, TPU employees donated more than $10,000 in gifts and goods to Greater Lakes families in 2007. A special thank you goes to Gina Rich, Generation, for coordinating the entire program on behalf of Community Connection.

Three employees eligible for donated PTO or sick leave

To donate, contact your timekeeper or Public Utilities Human Resources, 502‑8158, for a PTO/sick leave donation form. You also can download the form from the Human Resources section of CityWeb.
