Serving our customers means more than just providing reliable,
high-quality, and competitively priced utility services. It means caring
for our community.
Our employees generously share their time, talents and
resources with many community agencies, including
participating in the annual United Way campaign and Community
Connection, Tacoma Public Utilities employee volunteer program.
Employees have been at the heart of Community Connection for 20 years,
choosing projects that improve the quality of life for the people
we serve, especially children and senior citizens.
Employees volunteered more than 3,000 hours through Community Connection
events in 2006. Below are a few examples of how Tacoma Public Utilities
employees are making a difference.

• More than 350 employees, family members
and friends came
out to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound at the annual
Bowl-a-Thon. The event raised more than $22,000 in
2006.
• Employees donated more than $170,000 through pledges
and special events for United Way’s 2006 campaign. Tacoma Power’s
Cowlitz River Project was United Way of Lewis
County’s 2006 Company of the Year for its corporate and employee
participation.

• Bake sales and other fun events raised $1,300 to assist
18 low-income seniors with their utility bills.

• Employees collected more than 750 pounds of peanut
butter and jelly for a local food bank.
• Each year, employees participate in the
Salvation Army Giving
Tree, purchasing gifts for more than 250 children
and seniors who need some holiday cheer.
Tacoma Public Utilities also offers
assistance
programs for our residential customers who may
have difficulty paying their utility bills. We served approximately
2,500 households through the Family Need assistance program in 2006;
approximately 8,000 households receive the special rate discount for
seniors and customers with disabilities.
